Satellite TV Installation in Minnesota

When considering Satellite TV, one of the biggest obstacles is the issue of satellite tv installation itself.  The cost of the equipment, how to properly aim the satellite dish properly, and the cables and routing necessary. These are real issues, as proper installation is essential for optimal reception.
Package Deal
With the explosion of the satellite TV industry, many satellite TV providers offer packages with their subscription services to entice interested consumers in purchasing their services. In order to receive their subscription services, these satellite TV providers package the hardware required to receive satellite TV service for a tiny price. As satellite TV companies make the bulk of their profit from their monthly subscription charge, the loss in offering the equipment and services for a low price is negligible.
As a result, most satellite TV installation will be provided as part of the initial offer in signing up with a satellite TV provider. Usually this is through a local technician that will provide the following services:
  • Fit the dish to your building to ensure that it is aimed directly at a broadcasting satellite
  • Set up the receiver
  • Provide a brief tutorial so that you will learn about how to use your satellite system
However, in some areas of the country, satellite providers do not provide satellite TV installation as part of their packages. In these instances, it is recommended that you hire a local technician that specializes in satellite TV installation.

You Can DIY...

But we do not recommend it.  It only takes a handful of tools and easy to follow directions are available for the handy.  However, the quality of your picture, particularly in those times when weather conditions are adverse is much better when an experienced professional does the setup and "aiming" of your dish.  If you must do it yourself... Here are some tips .
General Site Survey
To get a signal, the satellite dish must be pointed directly at the satellite, with NO obstructions between the two. This means NO trees and NO buildings. Take into consideration future tree growth, house remodeling or additions and new construction in your area.
The satellite signal WILL NOT PASS through leaves or branches.
Use our Satellite Look Angle calculator to determine the proper dish angles.
Finding a Clear Line of Sight
Get yourself a good compass, the best you can afford. Check the "Azimuth" and "Elevation" for your location here!
Locate at least one site on your property that has a clear view to the satellite.
Do you have at least one clear view to the satellite? Remember, no trees, leaves, or buildings can be between the dish and the satellite.
If the answer is NO, your site may not be suitable for installing the satellite system.
If the answer is MAYBE, you may want to contact a local digital satellite dealer for information about having a professional installer conduct a thorough site survey.
If the answer is YES, your site should be suitable for installing the system. Go ahead to the next section of these instructions.

Next step...Once set up and connected you will need to fine tune the dish to get the highest possible Signal Strength.

Fine Tuning
Now that you have received the satellite signal, it is important to fine tune the dish pointing to make sure you have the maximum possible signal strength. Maximizing the signal is important, in that, it reduces "rain fade" during inclement weather. Loosen the elevation bolts, then gently continue turning the dish a little in the same direction you were turning it when you began to receive the satellite signal. Pause for a few seconds each time after moving the dish. Turn the dish in this way until the signal quality strength reaches its highest reading and then begins to fall. Then slowly turn the dish the opposite way until you again receive the highest reading on the Signal Strength screen. Important: The Signal Strength reading does not need to be "100." Lock in on the highest possible signal. Tighten the azimuth bolts.

Loosen the elevation bolts. Slowly tilt the dish up and down to improve the Signal Strength reading. When you are satisfied that you have the strongest signal, tighten the elevation bolts.

Or Better Yet, Get Professional Installation

For the vast majority of people, the simple answer is to get professional installation. But even here their are risks. The large satellite companies are always hiring new installers. And while that is great for the economy, you may well end up with a rookie doing your installation.  In the Minneapolis St Paul  Minnesota area your best option is to contact The Connected Home to arrange your Satellite TV installation and service.
